Google Reader Notifier
Google Reader Notifier is a Firefox Extension.
You can download it from the Firefox Add-Ons site.
Google Reader has become one of the most popular RSS feed readers. Unfortunately, one the of things that it’s missing is a notification system. You can bet Google will eventually create one, but until then, the Google Reader Notifier does the job very well. This extension places a small icon in your status bar, along with the number of unread items waiting for you in Google Reader.
After installing the extension, you’ll see the following in the bottom-right corner of your status bar:

The above image indicates that you have not logged in. Just click on the icon in your status bar and the options window will appear. It is here that you will enter your Google information:

Once logged in, you’ll notice the icon in the status bar has changed and the number of unread items in your Google Reader appears to the right of it:

When new items arrive, you will be notified with a small pop-up window that briefly appears above your status bar:

Now I’d like to walk you through the rest of the available options.
Directly under where you entered your Google information, there is a section called “Mouse Actions.” Here you can specify what you’d like to happen when you click on the icon in your status bar. I opened the drop-down window so you can see all of the available options:

Next, you can set how often you’d like the extension to check your Google Reader account for updates. You can also disable the notification pop-up window:

In the next section, you can change the appearance of the button in the status bar:

Finally, you can enable/disable the context menu on right click:
