Dog Ears

Dog Ears is a Firefox Extension.

You can download it from the developer’s website or the Firefox Add-Ons site.

The Dog Ears extension allows you to place bookmarks inside of webpages. These bookmarks are called Dog Ears. This is ideal for long documents as you can place Dog Ears at the important parts, or to just remember where you left off.

Immediately after installing the extension, you’ll notice a Dog Ears icon located at the bottom right-corner of your Status Bar:

Let’s place a couple of Dog Ears on a CyberNet News article. To do so, you would do a keyboard/mouse combination of Shift + Left Click. You’ll notice a Dog Ear appear above the text with the Number 1 inside of it:

To place another Dog Ear, go to another section on the webpage and hit Shift + Click again. This time, the Dog Ear will have a Number 2 inside of it:

You can place as many Dog Ears as you’d like. The Dog Ears are saved locally on your computer. However, in order for them to be saved, you need to be running Firefox 2.0 and up. If you’re unsure which version you have running, click on this link and I’ll show you how to check it.

You can close this CyberNet article and when you return, the Dog Ears will be right where you left them. Let’s assume that this is what you do. When you return, how do you know where your Dog Ears are located?

It’s actually quite simple. Just click on the Dog Ears icon located in your status bar. It’ll take you to the first Dog Ear on the page. Click on the icon again and it will take you to the second Dog Ear…and so on…

OK…so we have 2 Dog Ears on a CyberNet News article. Now let’s add a Dog Ear to a totally different site…say an article from TechCrunch:

So now we have 2 Dog Ears on a CyberNet article, and 1 on a TechCrunch article. How do we keep track of them all?

Well, this extension has a nice feature that allows you to see all of the sites that have Dog Ears on them. Just right-click on the Dog Ears icon in your status bar and click Show Sidebar:

In the sidebar, you’ll see a listing of all the sites that have Dog Ears on them. Click on the site, and it will open up in your Firefox browser window:

There are several ways to delete Dog Ears. You can Shift + Click on each individual one, or you can remove them in bulk by right-clicking on the site in the sidebar and choosing “Delete”:

This extension allows some customization. Right-click on the Dog Ears icon in your status bar and choose “Options”:
